Step-by-Step Guide: How to Convert EML Files to HTML

In most cases, EML files are used in various email programs for storing single emails or electronic mail. Though most of the email clients support EML format, you can’t (without having any email clients) access any EML files.

However, users often need to open an EML on a device where no email clients are installed. In such a case, it’s best to convert EML files into HTML format. Because you can easily access HTML files using just a web browser.

In this article, I’ll go through the complete guide to EML to HTML conversion. Keep reading!

Introduction to EML and HTML files

EML: An EML file can be described as an ordinary file format used by numerous email clients to save a single email. EML messages contain the mail composition, message body, mail label containing the subject, sender’s, receiver’s, date, and details (if any).

HTML: HTML files are basically the text files that contain HyperText Markup Language code, which is used to structure and display content on the web. In fact, the HTML file is the backbone of any webpage that displays the structured and styled content to users.

Why convert EML to HTML?

To view the exact data of your EML files, you need to use any specific email clients. Though you can also open EML files using a notepad, it will display unclear texts only.

However, HTML documents are quite easy to view through any web browser. Even if you aren’t connected to the internet, you can open HTML files. Therefore, users often prefer HTML documents over the EML files. Here are several more common reasons to convert EML to HTML:

  • HTML allows for better formatting and styling of email content.
  • It’s quite easy to share HTML files via web links.
  • Users can embed HTML files and codes in their website.
  • Search engines can index HTML documents and make them available on the internet.

Step-by-step guide to convert EML files to HTML?

In order to successfully convert your EML files to HTML format, you can either use manual methods or go for any advanced converter. Here I have explained several easy methods:

Method 1: By renaming the EML file

In this method, you will need to rename your file and change the extension. Here is the process as below:

  • Open the File Explorer app on your desktop and locate the EML file where it’s saved on your device.
  • Right-click on the file and click on the “Rename” option.
  • Now, erase the.eml extension and rename it with.mht extension. Then, in the dialog box, click on the “Yes” button.
  • Once the file format changes, double-click on the file. It will open with the Internet Explorer application or the Microsoft Edge or any other default browser installed on your device.
  • After the email message opens with any of your browsers, press “Ctrl” and “S” together.
  • Specify any location on your device and change the extension to.html. Then click on the “Save” button.

As a result, your EML message will be converted into an HTML file and saved on your device. But the limitation is: you will lose the original structure of your email.

Method 2: Using the Outlook desktop application

This method is quite better than the previous method. Because this method doesn’t hamper the original structure of your emails. But before you start, make sure you have the Outlook application configured on your device.

  • First, open the Outlook application on your device. Then right-click and create a new folder on your Outlook account.
  • Locate the EML files on your device. Drag and drop them to the Outlook folder that you have created on the previous step.
  • Now, select a single email, and at the top-left corner, click on the “File” tab.
  • From the left sidebar, click on the “Save As” button.
  • Once the “Save As” wizard opens, here in the “Save as type” field, select the “HTML” format and click on the “Save” button.

Hence, you can convert your EML files to HTML format using the Outlook desktop application. But with the Outlook application, you can’t save multiple emails in HTML format at a time.

Note: I have used Outlook 2010 to perform this method. You can use any other Outlook version that is available to you.

Professional way to convert EML to HTML

Both the above-described manual methods have limitations. In order to convert your EML files in a hassle-free way, you should go for any professional converters. I would like to prefer the Regain EML to PST Converter software. Because it comes with both the easy-to-use UI and advanced features at a budget-friendly price.

  • Install the software and run it as an administrator on your device. You can also try out the demo version, which offers you to convert 30 items per folder.
  • Add your EML files. As this software allows you the batch conversion, you can add multiple EML files into it.
  • After you add the EML files, choose the format in which you want to convert them. In this case, I am choosing the HTML format. However, Regain EML Converter allows you to convert your EML files into multiple formats, including PDF, EMLX, PST, etc.
  • Now, specify a location on your device and click on the “Save” button.

That’s it. Your EML files will be converted and saved as HTML format on your device. WIth the help of this tool you can also import EML to Gmail , Office 365 and other formats.

Conclusion

Whenever you need to access your EML messages without any email clients, you should convert your EML files to HTML format. Because HTML files are quite easy to access even if you aren’t connected to the internet.

In order to convert your EML files in a smoother way, you can go for any EML converter. Otherwise, when you need to convert any single email, manual methods are quite good enough. However, for a safer conversion, try to take a backup of your EML files.
